The gamma irradiator located in the Nuclear Technology Development Center (CDTN), a
research institute of the Brazilian Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) has about 2.220 TBq
60Co source maximum activity with external dimensions 5.080 m x 9.820 m x 4.850 m in the
entrance labyrinth. The aim of this work is to estimate the equivalent dose rate at the labyrinth
entrance using MCNPX v 2.6.0 code. The dose rate in several points inside the labyrinth of the
irradiator were measured with TLD’s and compared with MCNPX modeling. The comparison
between Monte Carlo simulations results and measured data was performed to verify modeling
and simulation methods. Also the results of MCNPX simulations were compared with the
mathematical calculated protocol established by International Commission on Radiological
Protection (ICRP). The evaluation was carried out to demonstrate compliance with the
regulatory requirements for protection against external exposures from ionizing radiation.
