Diagnostic, interventional and therapeutic use of radiation is beneficial for hundreds of
millions of people in medicine each year. Every day around the world, ionizing radiation
is used for imaging of patients in more than 10 million diagnostic radiology procedures,
and 100,000 diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures. Ionizing radiation is also used
daily for therapy of patients in the 14,000 radiotherapy courses. The scale of this
activity is massive and increasing. Current issues in radiation protection of patients
include the fact that a substantial percentage of diagnostic imaging examinations are
unnecessary, and the cumulative dose to individuals from medical exposure is growing.
In addition, continued reports on radiation injuries from safety related events in the
medical use of ionizing radiation are raising awareness on the necessity for accident
prevention measures. The International Atomic Energy Agency is engaged in helping
reduce unnecessary and unintended medical exposure, including accidental under and
overexposure in radiotherapy. For this purpose the Agency has developed a coherent
strategy for strengthening radiation protection of patients globally, which started with
the first International Conference in Malaga, 2001, followed by the establishment of an
International Action Plan and a second International Conference in 2012, which
resulted in the so called Bonn Call-for Action, a joint position statement between the
IAEA and WHO. Within this framework, the IAEA performs a number of activities, such
as the development of standards and guidance, and training material, providing for
information exchange via a dedicated Web-site on patient protection (rpop.iaea.org),
with more than 60,000 page-views (the total number of pages viewed) per month, an
international campaign for the improvement of the justification process, the long term
tracking of radiation history of individual patients (smart card / smart rad track project),
the shared learning of safety significant events in radiotherapy (SAFRON) and X-ray
guided interventions (SAFRAD).
