In the last years, the hydroxyapatite, the principal mineral component of the bone and tooth
enamel, has been one of the dosimetric materials more studied and used in the high dose and
accidents dosimetry, as well as in the dating, by the technique of the Electron Paramagnetic
Resonance (EPR). For this reason, the hydroxyapatite could also be used as Optically
Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dosimeter in the dosimetry of high doses and accidents, and
also in the dating. This work presents a brief study of the Blue-OSL and IRSL behaviour of the
radiation dose response of the B-type synthetic hydroxyapatite, observing the possibility to use
this material in OSL dosimetry. The synthetic hydroxyapatite used in this work is the one of the
B-type once your composition is the closest of the tooth enamel composition. The synthetic B-
type hydroxyapatite used in this work was produced in the Laboratory of Bioceramics Materials
of the CBPF. The hydroxyapatite has OSL signal to both types of stimulus lights. The Blue-OSL
signal is larger than the IRSL signal, for the same values of dose. This implies that the photo-
efficiency in inducing recombination depends on the energy (wavelength) of stimulating photons
in this material. Therefore this synthetic hydroxyapatite can be used in OSL dosimetry for blue
light stimulus. These results indicate, preliminarily, the possibility of this synthetic hydroxyapatite
to be used as dose indicator material for the dosimetry of high doses and accidents using the
OSL techniques.
