This paper includes the use of Radiological Protection report in Dentistry (NCRP-145 or
Radiation Protection in Dentistry) laying down calculations and standards to be adopted to
ensure safety to those who may be exposed to ionizing radiation in dental facilities, according to
the dose limits set by the standard CNEN-NN-3:01 published in September 2011. The
methodology is directed to the use of computer language in data processing, offered by that
report, and a commercial application used to create residencies designs and decoration. The
FORTRAN language was adopted as a method for application to a real case. The result of this
combination consists of a program capable of returning data to the thickness of material, such
as: steel, lead, wood, glass, plaster, acrylic, acrylic and leaded glass, which can be used for
effective shielding beams monophasic or continuous pulse. Several variables are used to
calculate the thickness of the shield, such as the number of films used in the week, load film,
Use Factor, Occupancy Factor, distance between the wall and the source, Transmission Factor,
Workload, Dose Limit, beam intensity, intraoral examination and panoramic examination. Thus,
the program shows itself extremely useful and practical to obtain concrete values of barriers
thickness in dental facilities.
